History of Basaksehir
Basaksehir or the city of Sanabel is one of the newest areas of Istanbul in terms of administrative independence, founded in 2008 as a result of annexing neighborhoods.
The name “Başakşehir” is composed of sehir in the meaning of Medina and Başak in the sense of Sunbulah, Basaksehir means “the city of spikes.”
Geography and population of Basaksehir
The Basaksehir extends over an area of 104.33 square kilometers in the western European of the city of Istanbul, It is surrounded by other second-level districts of Istanbul, such as Eyüp, Sultangazi, Esenler, Bağcılar, Küçükçekmece, Avcılar, Esenyurt and Arnavutköy. Basaksehir is the closest populated area to the new Istanbul airport, the largest airport in the world.
Basaksehir is one of Istanbul’s most populous regions, with a population of 427,835 in 2018, according to the Directorate of Souls, distributed over eleven residential districts.
It is renowned for its first and second sections, and the Actili Industrial Organized Shop. Basaksehir, like other Turkish regions, has a diverse social fabric, with a prominent presence of conservative groups adhering to customs and teachings of religion.
Basaksehir’s Transportation and Infrastructure:
Basaksehir depends on a strong network of transport, such as public and private buses, and the metro line, and there is a connecting station that facilitates access to important areas in Istanbul, such as Ataturk International Airport and the Marmaray train linking the European and Asian continents. The state is working on a new tram line in Basaksehir, at a cost of 450 million Turkish liras.
Basaksehir has 15 large shopping centers, of which the five malls are the most important malls of Turkey: Mall of Istanbul, Olympa, Kaya Shehir Central Mall, Prestige Mall & Armina Mall..
Parks, Forests, Parks and Squares:

Educational, Cultural and Sports Facilities:
In Basaksehir region thereare 83 educational facilities: 9 educational centers, 21 secondary schools, 25 Prep, 23 elementary, 5 pre-school. In 2015, İbn Haldun Üniversitesi, İHÜ was founded, the university has 14 colleges and departments. The language of study is English for all faculties and departments except Faculty of Law where they teache in both Turkish and English and the Faculty of Islamic Sciences which is in Arabic, Turkish and English.
Basaksehir has five important cultural centers . It also has six important sports venues, most notably ‘Atatürk Sports Stadium Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadı’ , one of the largest and most important stadiums in the world, it accommodates 82,576 people and sports events in Europe.
The following public health facilities are located in Basaksehir: State Hospital Basaksehir, specialized clinics in Bahcesehir, family and community health centers.
Since 2016, a huge hospital called “Başakşehir Şehir Hastanesi” is being constructed which will be one of the largest in the world and will be completed in 2020. It has an area of one million meter square and a capacity of 2682 beds, and will serve 23600 patients.
Basaksehir has 98 mosques, the largest of which is the Sultan Selim Mosque in Bahçeşehir, which has a capacity of 9,000 worshipers, and the Basaksehir Mosque and Tunahan Cami Mosque, which can accommodate 5,000 worshipers.
Urban Development in Basaksehir:
The housing and construction sector in Basaksehir region is witnessing a rapid development, thanks to large housing projects of high quality and sophistication and charming views of the valley and the botanical garden amidst the calm atmosphere enjoyed by the region.
It is possible to say that the residents of Basaksehir are mainly middle-income groups, and this area is a favored area for housing by the rich Arabs. In fact, housing prices in the Basaksehir region are not very high at the moment, but they are not the cheapest. The average price per square meter is 3,875 TL and ranges in the range of 2907 – 4845 TL. Housing prices in the Basaksehir region have risen in the past five years by 30%, and the pace of development and price growth will increase significantly in the future.
Future of Basaksehir:
Due to the large urbanization and service in the region of Basaksehir, it is expected that there will be a significant increase in the importance of this area and its activities and real estate values by 30 to 50 percent during the next three years, and this expectation is due to a number of reasons, including:
· The launch of the new Istanbul airport which can accommodate 90 million passengers in its first phase, and provides employment for about 225 thousand citizens. Basaksehir will undoubtedly be the focus of real estate investors who recognize the importance of Basaksehir as the second closest neighborhood to the new airport.
The completion of one of the largest hospitals in the world, the city hospital located in Basaksehir and its launch in 2020, a world-class hospital with an area of one million square meters, which means the presence of a lot of specialized doctors and staff, visitors and patients, who will try to find suitable place to accommodate from Basaksehir, which will increase the demand for real estate and raise prices.
Basaksehir is adjacent to the new Istanbul Canal project called the Century Project of the Turkish State, which connects Kucukcekmece Lake in the south with the Black Sea in the north, where the lands of Basaksehir are expected to have a golden future at the opening of the new Istanbul Canal that may parallel the areas adjacent to the Bosphorus.
